Background and aim: Asthma is a common ailment having larger circadian difference. The nocturnal asthma (NA) is inconstant exacerbation of asthma condition related to the rises in warning sign at night and there is need for treatment, air route alertness, and/or falling of lung role. These symptoms are linked to sleep or known as circadian events. Chronotherapeutics is a management system which consists of in-vivo drug accessibility programmed to check rhythms of ailment in direction to improve the therapeutic outcomes by suppressing the side effects. This review aims to provide an overview of NA, chronotherapeutics, bilayer tablets, advanced techniques involved in the fabrication of bilayer tablets as well as related patents.

Methods: Relevant literature about the latest developments and updated information related to NA, chronotherapeutics and bilayer tablets has been search in Google, Web of Science, PubMed portals. Bilayer tablet mediated chronotherapy is getting a lot of attention and consideration as this system is fabricated as depending upon the body circadian rhythm. Bilayer tablets can deliver the bioactive at appropriate time, place as well as amount.

Results: Available literature advocated that the bilayer matrix tablet containing a single drug in the sustained release film and fast releasing film, may be beneficial for the chronic disease like asthma, migraine, diabetes, hypertension and inflammation which usually require immediate effect as well as maintenance therapy.

Conclusion: The practice of nanotechnology in the arena of medicine will transform the strategies of detection and treatment of a wide range of diseases in the upcoming years. The findings of this review confirm the importance of bilayer tablet based chronotherapy in nocturnal asthma.
